I really liked this book. It has romance, suspense, mystery, excitement, and humor. It's a story about a Texas Ranger, a telephone operator, a train robber and his gang, and a precocious young girl. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more of a faith and Christianity theme but to be honest, it doesn't claim to have that. It is a really enjoyable story with a respectful handling of the romantic story line. It starts out with an exciting train robbery and ends with ...an exciting train robbery. The main characters, Georgie, the telephone operator, and Luke, the undercover Texas Ranger, are at first glance, not at all suited for each other and you wonder if they ever will be. After all, Luke has to hide his true identity from Georgie and he has to 'take up' with some unsavory characters in order to keep his cover in tact. Georgie’s strength of character has made her a successful phone operator, living on her own, independent in a man's world. She is a crusader for bird preservation and wages a war against the local hat maker who uses body parts from real birds on his hats, and is successful in her quest.
I never found myself bored with this book or skipping paragraphs. Each sentence was interesting and important to the story. I'm not sure what year this story is supposed to have taken place but it seems like around the late 1800's to early 1900's. The author prefaces and ends the book with her historical research, so you know her depiction of the time period is accurate. I will be looking for more books by this author.
